Toronto Points of Interest

Harbourfront Centre

Spanning 10 acres of Toronto’s prime waterfront, Harbourfront Centre is one of the city’s best cultural hot spots. It hosts over 4,000 events every year, from concerts in the music garden to international food festivals. Since most events are free to residents and tourists alike, Harbourfront attracts over 12 million visitors annually. Some come for the shops, restaurants, and boardwalk. Others visit Harbourfront Centre for the art exhibits, concerts, readings, and winter ice rink. To see a list of upcoming events, visit www.harbourfrontcentre.com. Harbourfront Centre is located at 235 Queens Quay West, on the shores of Lake Ontario.

City hall

Nathan Phillips Square

Sitting right in front of the iconic City Hall, Nathan Phillips Square is a centre of activity. In summer, the square transforms into a farmers’ market, an outdoor art gallery, a concert venue, and a cafeteria. From mid-July through to the end of August, the square hosts Fresh Wednesdays, an event that combines a farmers’ market with a live concert, and Tasty Thursdays, where $5 buys you a delicious lunch and a reflecting pool-side seat to a live musical performance. The square’s Peace Garden is a great place to escape from the hectic city streets. In winter, the reflecting pool turns into one of Toronto’s best skating rinks; if you’re willing to brave the cold, you can rent a pair of skates at the square. For more information on Nathan Phillips Square, visit the city’s website at http://www.toronto.ca/city_hall_tour/nps.htm.

High Park

High Park is a favourite among joggers, cross-country skiers, and theatregoer alike. Every year, the urban oasis hosts “Dream in High Park,” where you can watch performances of Shakespeare’s best works under the stars. In winter, cross-country skiers can sail across the powder anywhere in the 161 hectare (399 acre) park. And joggers can make their way around Grenadier Pond, one of the city’s most picturesque spots. The trackless train is the best way to see the entire park. The 25-minute ride will take visitors to all the top attractions, including the High Park Zoo and the Hillside Gardens. The fare is $4 per person, or $3 for children and seniors. You can buy your train tickets from the train operator. To learn more about High Park, visit www.toronto.ca/parks/highpark.htm.

Yonge-Dundas Square

During summer months, Yonge-Dundas Square is the meeting place for the whole city. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown just across from Toronto Eaton Centre, the Square hosts concerts, art exhibits, and even free movie screenings for the Toronto International Film Festival. The fountains are a treat on hot summer days - watch out for the sudden geysers that shoot water eight feet into the air! Yonge-Dundas Square sits above the Dundas subway station on the southeast corner of Yonge and Dundas Streets. For more information, visit www.ydsquare.ca.

St. Lawrence Market

The St. Lawrence Market has been feeding the people of Toronto since 1803. According to Food & Wine Magazine, the market is one of the 25 best in the world. The South Market, open Tuesday to Saturday, is the best place in Toronto to shop for fresh meat, fish, and cheese. If you want to take a cooking class or watch a celebrity chef prepare a mouth-watering meal, head to the Market Kitchen on the West Mezzanine. And if the smells in the market make you hungry, visit Carousel Bakery for their “World Famous Peameal Bacon Sandwich,” or try the Italian sandwiches at Mustachio (the foccacia bread is delicious). On Saturdays, the North Market opens to shoppers looking for the freshest produce. And on Sundays, the produce is packed away to make room for antiques for the Sunday Antique Market. The St. Lawrence Market is located at 92 Front Street East. To see a layout of the market, and to find out more about the vendors, visit www.stlawrencemarket.com/index.html.
