Where to stay in Toronto
As with most cities, staying in a hotel in the downtown core of Toronto will cost much more than staying on the outskirts of the city. If you’re looking to save some money on your trip, consider booking a hotel room in the Greater Toronto Area, or the GTA. Neighbouring cities like Mississauga, Oakville, and Pickering are all home to chain hotels like Holiday Inn, Best Western, Hilton, and Travelodge. Taking the transit from neighbouring cities into Toronto is a hassle - it requires transfers, a bit of money, and a whole lot of time. Make sure you stay in a hotel that is close to a Go Transit bus or train station, which takes travellers straight to Toronto on one fare, or stay in a hotel by a highway if you plan on driving into the city. If only the downtown core will do, here are a few of Toronto’s great hotels.

Drake Hotel
With photography exhibits, live music, a formal dining room, a packed lounge, and an indie bar, this boutique hotel is a centre for both culture afficionados and hipsters alike. It also has hotel rooms for sleeping in. The high ceilings feature custom millwork, the vintage furniture is re-upholstered in cozy fabrics, and each room comes with a unique selection of snacks and beverages. You can also take advantage of the many technological amenities, like an LCD TV, a DVD player, high-speed internet, and an iPod docking station fully loaded with a listening library. Drake Hotel rooms are available in four sizes, from a cozy 150 square feet to a luxurious suite. Rates range from $189 to $319 a night. Spa sessions and personal shopping assistants are also available.
The Drake Hotel is at 1150 Queen Street West. For more information and to reserve a room online, head to www.thedrakehotel.ca.
The Fairmont Royal York
If streamlined modern decor is not to your taste, stay at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Built from 1927 to 1929, this classically-styled hotel was once the tallest building in the British Commonwealth. It was the grandest hotel of its day, with hand-painted ceilings, travertine pillars, and crystal chandeliers. These features are still in place today, allowing guests to feel the history in this Toronto landmark.
Guests of the Royal York are in good company; Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has stayed at the hotel on her visits to Toronto. Anyone wanting to feel like royalty should purchase the Fairmont Gold experience. A team caters to your every desire, from arranging dinner reservations and limousine service to treating you to cocktail canapes every night. If you’d rather eat your canapes at a restaurant, reserve one of the other rooms; you can choose between the 250-square-foot Fairmont Room, the lake view Fairmont View Room, and the 500-square-foot Deluxe Room. With the hotel’s five restaurants, four bars, pool, health club, and spa, you might not need to step outside the front doors. Rooms start at $229, but expect to pay an extra fee for parking. The Fairmont Royal York is located in the heart of downtown Toronto at 100 Front Street West. To book your reservation online, head to www.fairmont.com/royalyork.
Le Meridien King Edward
The King Eddy, as the hotel is affectionately known, is famous for its old world charm. Rooms and public spaces are opulent and grand, showcasing the hotel’s stunning Edwardian architecture. And you can take your afternoon tea at Victoria’s, the hotel’s elegant dining room. But you won’t have to leave your modern conveniences at home. Guest rooms feature comfortable beds, soaking tubs and power showers, and high speed Internet access. You can stick to your New Year’s resolutions by exercising in Le Fitness, the onsite 1,500 square foot fitness centre. After your workout, head to the Nouvelle Maria Spa and Salon. Then head out into the city; centrally located in the financial district, King Eddy is close to all of Toronto’s downtown attractions.
Rooms range in price from $150 to $250 and over, depending on the season; tourists travelling in a crowd can book a suite or a connecting room. Le Meridien King Edward is located at 37 King Street East. To make a reservation, visit the hotel’s website at http://www.starwoodhotels.com/lemeridien/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1912.
Hotel Victoria
Hotel Victoria might not have all of the amenities of the Drake or the Fairmont Royal York. Yet when you’re sleeping in the centre of the city, do you really need restaurants and gyms inside your hotel? Hotel Victoria is just steps from all of the downtown attractions - Rogers Centre, ACC, CN Tower, and Harbourfront. Rooms are clean and basic, featuring cable TV, voice mail, and high speed Internet. But the price - starting at $115 a night - can’t be beat. Hotel Victoria is located at 56 Yonge Street. To reserve a room, visit Hotel Victoria’s website at www.hotelvictoria-toronto.com.
Hotel Le Germain
Hotel Le Germain is one of the city’s most stylish and comfortable hotels. Rooms feature contemporary furnishings covered in rich textural fabrics. If the relaxing decor doesn’t put you to sleep, the goose down comforters and Egyptian cotton sheets will. While staying at Le Germain, you can also enjoy the cappuccino bar in the library, the continental breakfast, and the high speed Internet access - all complimentary. When the weather is warm, you can spend the afternoon on the rooftop terrace perfecting your stroke on the putting green. Room rates start at $245 a night. Hotel Le Germain is located at 30 Mercer Street. To reserve a room online, visit www.germaintoronto.com/en/index.asp.
